Technology Education at Schechter

Technology Education at Gross Schechter Day School is unique in its educational approach.  Children in Kindergarten through 8th grade receive weekly instruction in keyboarding skills and hardware instruction, as well as learning new software and its applications.  Our entire technology curriculum is geared to correlate to curriculum in other classes at Schechter.

Our goal in technology is to enhance the educational program of our school by curriculum integration.  For example, 6th graders learning about ancient empires and Europe in social studies are also creating a PowerPoint presentation on an ancient empire of their choice in computer class.  They spend class time searching the Internet, researching their empires, and utilizing the information they have gathered to prepare a presentation to share with classmates.   In addition, they are writing e-mails to students in Italy, sharing cultural similarities and differences.

Our students are fortunate to learn in such a remarkable facility.  In the past, our computer lab consisted of twelve older computers, but today our lab contains 23 brand new computers, a new scanner, and two professional printers.  Our Internet access is quick and efficient, allowing for maximum learning to occur.

Each classroom is also equipped with two or three new computers, and a duplex inkjet printer.  This allows  students and teachers continuous access to technology in their classroom.  In addition, each classroom is outfitted with a new television, VCR, and telephones. Videos can be shown in each individual classroom, throughout the building, or in specific wings of the building.  We even have the ability to broadcast messages to every part of the building using our new public address system.   Each morning, announcements are made to the entire school using this system.

Classroom teachers utilize the computer lab to maximize learning.  Each afternoon the lab is available for  teachers and their classes to research subject matter.  It is just one more technology tool that staff are adding to help teach their curriculum.

The Iris S. and Bert L. Wolstein Media Center is equipped with an additional bank of computers that students and faculty can use if the computer lab is occupied.

We have grown from 30 in the Malvern building to 119 computers in mere months.  Our infrastructure utilizes the newest technology with servers, routers, and switches galore. The goals set for technology were lofty, but we have met them.  Our students are learning and using technology in a state-of-the-art environment.

Our staff is also using the new technology offered in the building.  Through our new mentoring program, teachers aid other staff members, enhancing their educational experience.
