Music at Schechter

(click below to go to...)

Schechter’s vocal and instrumental music program provides excellent opportunities for students to develop their self esteem, nurture individual talents, learn team work, expand their horizons, and, of course, have fun!  They learn about the lives of composers, music history, and the world of music as they prepare selections for performance and hone skills they will keep for a lifetime.

 The Bands

What do Beethoven, Scooby Doo, Fiddler on the Roof, and Mission Impossible have in common?  They are just some of the musical works played by the school’s three bands - Beginning, Intermediate, and Jazz.  Music Teacher Lynne Leutenberg Yulish introduces a broad range of music to Schechter’s instrumental ensembles, from marches, swing, and Broadway and movie favorites, to some of the best from the classical repertoire.  This year, the bands are performing Grieg, Mussorgsky, Harry Potter, the Simpsons, and Phantom of the Opera.  The groups have performed at school and also at outside venues like the Palace Theater and the JCC.

 The Choirs

Schechter's two choirs, under the direction of Lynne Leutenberg Yulish, provide lots of fun opportunities for students in grades 2-5 to sing and perform a  variety of music in Hebrew and English.   The older Manginah (melody) choir, will be performing a 25 minute tribute to Broadway this spring. Whether presenting a concert for Schechter, at Tower City during the winter holidays, or at area nursing homes and other organizations, the choirs put on quite a show!

 Other Performing Groups

Kids on Broadway for students in grades K-4 and Permitted Broadway for grades 5 through 8 rounded out the music program in 2002-2003.  Under the direction of Kim Lausin, our preschool director and also a very talented music and theater director,  both programs seek to “foster self-esteem and self-confidence without fear of failure or ridicule,”  says Lausin.  Although performance-based, emphasis is on the process and effort that contribute to the final product.  Lausin adds, “The one rule in Drama is that you give at least 100%.”  For family and friends clapping and singing along at last year's performances, the results were certainly stellar!
