Middle School

The Middle School at Gross Schechter Day School consists of the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. The Middle School aims to support early adolescents’ developmental needs as we challenge by stretching their minds and spirits. As students begin exploration of their own strengths, identities and interests, they also seek greater independence. We approach this increased need for independence with a program designed for increased responsibility for self and respect for others. Our teachers work together to build developmentally appropriate instructional approaches, shared learning goals and to support students as they make meaningful connections between disciplines.

We want our students to be able to:

  • Think creatively
  • Identify and solve complex and meaningful problems
  • Know their passions, strengths and challenges
  • Communicate and work well with others
  • Lead healthful lives
  • Be ethical and caring citizens of a diverse world

Students learn that with effort comes achievement and with achievement comes readiness for future academic challenges.

The Middle School begins the day with T’fillot (prayer) and continues with daily studies in math, science, language arts, and social studies, as well as Judaic subjects.  Art, music, computer technology, and physical education round out the curriculum.  Wednesday and Friday are early mornings with classes beginning at 7:45 am.  Field trips are an important part of the curriculum toward the end of the year to places like Washington, DC and Chicago.   Eighth graders embark on their culminating educational experience at Schechter — a three week trip to Israel
