General Studies at Schechter

The content of the "General Studies" curriculum is intended to give students what they need to know in order to build successful futures.  The flow of each year's curriculum and the flow of each discipline through the grades builds on the concepts, understandings, skills, and content learned in prior grades.  There is a relationship between the content areas; our curriculum holistic and interdisciplinary.

The basic General Studies goals are to develop:

·        Critical thinking skills

·        The ability to communicate clearly

·        The essential knowledge to understand the world

·        The desire to be a life long learner

·        The social skills to relate with others

·        The tools to understand the physical environment

·        Responsibility for their actions and their futures

·        A healthy self-concept

·        Experiences with a variety of disciplines

·        An understanding of technology and its place in the modern world

·        A love of the arts

·        The knowledge to care for their bodies

We strive to produce students who

·        Have knowledge in the content areas and know how to apply their
         knowledge in real life situations.

·        Critically reflect on their personal experience and are aware of their own
         strengths.

·        Participate in the process of helping others and improving the world in
         which they live.

·        Develop social and interpersonal skills to work cooperatively and
collaboratively with teachers and other students.

·        Develop the skills in the academic areas which will translate into success
both in school and in life.

·        Have substantive experiences in the full spectrum of academic subject
areas: language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, health, art,
         music, physical education, and technology.

The curriculum is constant yet flexible, continually evolving to reflect emerging student interests, incorporate new materials and topics, and respond to world events.  It is achieved through educational processes and strategies which make it meaningful.

The subjects taught include, language arts, math, social studies, health, science, physical education, art, music, and computer science.
