Welcome to 5th grade! There are so many exciting experiences ahead of us. I am very ready to get started, though I am sure that the kids would like a little more summer. We have a new way to practice and enrich math skills this year. It is called the “24 Game”. Your children will be able to access from either home or school. Each time they play one of the games, they will receive points. They will be able to compete with their classmates as well as the fourth graders. The 24 Game is more than just basic computation. It really teaches a child how to problem solve. Your child will have a card with a password and a username. You may want to post it on your refrigerator. Try playing one of the games with your child. They are really quite challenging! We will begin the year in language arts by going over the summer reading projects. We will then spend a “short” time on “short” stories. Hoot will be the first novel we will read in class. Once again, we will require independent reading for 100 minutes per week, so look for that reading log. We will be working in 6 week units for social studies and science. That means we can spend a more concentrated amount of time on each subject. We will intersperse science experiments while we are working on social studies. We will be studying U.S. history this year. You can expect your child to have approximately 1 1/2 hours of homework a night between General and Judaic studies. If your child is spending more time than this, please let me know. Contact me anytime with questions or concerns. Thank you for sharing your children with me for another year. Susan Siegel |
