8th grade is working on acrylic paintings about themselves, either in the past, present or future. They will be incorporating different artists’ painting styles in their paintings
7th grade will soon experiment with watercolor and create a painting using the style of Georgia O'Keeffe. They are now finishing a copper tooling project. They have learned about relief sculpture and the anatomy of the face for this unit. They are creating large figures using copper for the face and a body designed using foam board and acrylic paints. Texture will be emphasized in both these media. 6th grade is working on a lettering project. They will practice old English or Hebrew calligraphy. They will then design a poster using their lettering and the influence of Ben Shahn. Social issues are the theme of this project. 5th grade is making pinatas from paper mache' and crepe paper. They have a choice of theme and are creating a 3-dimensional form as they did with their bank sculptures. (A pinata' is a paper mache' sculpture covered with crepe paper. It is an art form from Mexico.)
4th grade is working on a clay project. They are creating yadayim (literally "hands," i.e., pointers for reading from the Torah) and working with texture. 3rd grade has begun a clay unit. They will learn different aspects and forms of architecture. They will design a clay façade of a house using the knowledge they learn of architecture. 2nd grade continues their unit on abstract art. Using what they've learned about of Miro, Kandinsky and Klee, as well as lessons on lines and shapes, the students are creating their own abstract painting in tempera. 1st grade is starting a clay project. They learned how to work with clay using slabs, coils, and balls of clay. They will create a pinched pot bug using these techniques.
